Sadly, I can't return this thing, since I waited way too long to use it. I'm well outside the return period, which is totally my fault. But, just beware! Even if it's Prime/Amazon, you may not get exactly what you were looking for. I am very surprised, as this is the first
time a "Sold by Amazon" item has had an issue like this in my experience.
Being used as a USB flash drive to play music from is fine because you're not going to be constantly writing to it. The car reads from the flash drive, and that's about it.
There's a little red light embedded in the plastic that blinks when the drive is being accessed. It's not bright enough to be obnoxious, but it is bright enough to be seen as long as it's not being used in direct sunlight.
The read speeds are mediocre at best but again that's not an issue when you're just using it to play music.
The write speeds are downright atrocious - so mind bendingly slow I thought my computer only recognized it as a USB1.1 device. My initial load of music to fill it up took hours to transfer 6gb of music.
It does score points, however, for being so tiny. It slides into the slot in the car and hides out of sight and out of the way. Plug it into the dash with no fear that your clumsy hamfisted friend will bump into it while getting into your car and snap off and break the USB connector! Inconspicuously insert it into the headunit and don't worry about making a long laser light-show protrusion out of your dash! Discretely load 16gb of music into a small flash drive that blends into your interior and also fits in tight spaces.
I mainly bought it for ReadyBoost. Initially I got an error stating it was not ReadyBoost compatible, but after running a check/repair disk command from the properties tabs, (even though no errors were indicated)it was OK to use for Readyboost.
EDIT-I came to find that my DISK was running at 100% in the task manager and it was slowing my computer. The only way to resolve this was to remove the device and then my computer was fine. I installed it in my other Windows 10 computer to use for photo storage only. Again, my disk was running at 99% to 100% and computer was slow until I removed this device. I have revised my rating downward.
This low profile flash drive was the perfect solution to allow me to use a flash drive and still close the cover. It writes fast and I use a little figurine on a string that helps me to pull it out when I need to.
The little tether ring thing is very small, you'll need something about the diameter of dental floss. A normal sized keychain isn't going to work.
…Until recently, that is, when I decided to use it in my 2015 Subaru Impreza as a mass storage device for all my MP3 music files. The SanDisk Cruzer Fit flash drive works perfectly in this capacity, supplying my car’s infotainment system with a nearly unending supply of music, all neatly sorted by album. The car stereo does the rest. It plays every song perfectly and displays all album information, except (unfortunately) for album art.
Because the low profile SanDisk Cruzer Fit 32GB flash drive is so small, it takes almost no space in my car’s storage compartment. I can put other items in this space without fear of damaging the flash drive.
The SanDisk Cruzer Fit 32GB flash drive is extremely versatile. From computer backups to music and photo storage, it is an extremely handy device to have around. Highly recommended.
It is tiny (slightly smaller than my MS wireless mouse transmitter). A tiny bit difficult to remove due to its small size. As one reviewer stated, the tiny wire loop for a lanyard will only handle something like dental floss.
Was in process of contacting Sandisk and found this:
Factors that may increase drive temperature during use
· External environment & host device
In environments that are on the higher end of the tested temperature range, such as 25 º C - 45º C, it is normal for the temperature of your flash drive to increase. The exterior of the drive functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the drive to the cooler air outside. If the temperature of the ambient environment is high or if the temperature of your host devices (such as your laptop which can also generate heat) is high, the drive will release heat in a less efficient manner. It is normal for the drive to be warmer in these circumstances than it would be if the ambient environment or host device was cooler.
· Large file transfers & extended usage
An increase in drive temperature is also normal if you are using your flash drive to transfer large files or multiple files. Large file transfers may take an extended period of time to complete and can require more energy than a small file transfer. Multiple file transfers that are completed over a short period of time can generate a similar amount of energy. During these drive operations, the interior temperature of the drive increases and the drive will release more heat through the drive's exterior in order to complete the data transfer.
· USB drives with metal material
Metal absorbs more heat than plastic materials. Metal also releases heat when touched at a faster rate and may feel hot as compared to drives made out of plastic materials that are being used in the same way. SanDisk iXpand flash drive, SanDisk Ultra Fit USB, SanDisk Ultra Flair USB, SanDisk Ultra USB Type-C, Cruzer Force USB and SanDisk Extreme PRO USB flash drive products all incorporate more metal material than other SanDisk USB drives.
Any of the above factors may result in your drive running warm, if you experience this and find the elevated temperature to be uncomfortable, please consider waiting 10-15 seconds after your transfer is complete to remove/eject the drive.
Kudos that they have support.
