I don't like the way these USB flash drives are constructed. I had to use a knife to get them open the first time I used them (forget about just sliding your thumb up) to expose the USB connector. And I had to use the knife aggressively, to get it to open up. Then, once you've used these drives 2-3 times, you can't just expose the USB connector and stick it in a port because the "protector" will slide back over it as you slide it in, meaning you haven't inserted the connector into the port all the way. This means you have to hold your thumb tightly on the cover while you slide the connector into your USB port just so the cover doesn't slide back over the connector. This is aggravating when your port is on the side of a laptop and you have to pick up the laptop just to insert the stick drive. I haven't had any problems with actually using the drives---they perform very well for copying files. But there are easier ways to construct a flash drive cover to protect the connector--this design needs to go in the trash, and I wouldn't buy it again on any brand of flash drive. it aggravates me so much I had to give this drive one star.

I bought three packs of the 2GB three packs (so 9 total) and they had a light, were pretty quick, and the slide out latch worked great. I then needed a bit larger size 4GB would suffice, since I liked the 2GB so much I bought three packs of the three pack 4GB version. Slow! Even large single files were less than 3MB/sec. Forget about throwing a bunch of small files on it, it will run less than 1MB/sec. Also there is no indicator light on the 4GB version. First one I used I thought it was just a bad one. But none of the 9 I bought had the light. Then there's the latch. On the 2GB version it was great, snapped in place, wouldn't budge until you pressed firmly down on it to slide the connector back into the casing. Well 4GB version I have trouble putting the flash drive in my laptop because it slides back into the case just by trying to install it in the computer. Bad, bad, bad. Sorry Verbatim, stick with the same design as the 2GB and I'll buy a bunch. But for now, forget these 4GB ones.

Dear Verbatim; Someone in your company needs to get on a plane, fly to China and review and write procedures for your chip maker to burn in and test the chip going into your USB Thumbdrives. You are putting your name on them and they are shipping you defective crap. I bought a three pack and one of them died 10 minutes after I started using it. First time I have ever had any USB go poof and quit working. This was a 4 gig drive and I am seriously unhappy. While you are about it redesign the protective retracting cover thats pissing everyone else off. Test some of the drives on arrival. You find any defective ones ship the entire shipment back. That will force them to clean up their act. Signed former Intel employee with 40 years working in semi-conductor Fabs.

Finally used a rubber dishwashing glove to get enough traction to open the thing. Not happy.
And my PC doesn't even recognise the flash drive. Wonderful. A total fail all around. Not the Verbatim quality I used to know.

These are decent storage drives, and the price is right, but they will have issues if you're using them in any other capacity than simply storing or transferring files. They have low to average read and write speed, and work well enough in a windows environment. However, I bought them primarily to use as installation media for deploying various windows and linux distributions. For reasons unknown, these drives will fail to detect or operate at random during a boot sequence or halfway through an installation of windows. If a machine power cycles, the drive is likely to detect and work fine, but if the computer reboots without a power cycle, there's a good chance the drive will stop functioning. If you experience issues, look for an unblinking red light on the drive. When this happens, your only recourse is to plug/unplug the drive, power cycle the computer, and try again.

I'm a computer technician and I've tried a few dozen permutations of distros, packages and methods of loading media, all of which work great on other drives, but not these drives. I've found these issues to be repeatable and predictable on many different computers with diverse hardware configurations. I carry multiple tool kits around, and I wanted these to be copies of my universal rescue drive so I could always have one in each kit, but they're worthless in that capacity.

Last year, I purchased these same Verbatim Store 'n' Go 4 GB USB Flash Drives and they were great in their operation and in their construction. I keep them in a 10 teacher unit for our students to borrow overnight if they need them. (This is a 35 student Special Education unit.) Our student base is increasing so I needed more and decided to purchase them early. In addition, I'm collaborating in writing a book and needed one drive with a low capacity for one of the authors and these seemed perfect. Unfortunately, I didn't see the picture clearly depicting a change in the flash drives from last year. The previous ones I bought allowed the metal part of the flash drive to be pulled back into a completely covering plastic casing when not in use. In fact, part of the plastic casing has been removed from the back of the flash drive covering as the blue flash drive as shown in the picture. I thought this was simply a picture of the flash drive being pushed out fully into the position needed for inserting it into the USB port. It's not. Fully one-third of the casing back is "missing", presumably to save some small amount of money on its manufacturing process. Thus, even when pulled into the casing, the metal flash drive is exposed and unprotected from any damage. The flash drive works as well as it did before, but this missing part of the back is unacceptable in terms of protecting the important part of the device when it is being stored. It might as well not ave any "protection" at all as well as this cut-down casing provides. In addition, there has been a basic change in the way the "business end" of the flash drive can be pushed out from the way it was on last year's model. It's harder to push the flash drive out than it used to be. That part is not as bothersome as the cut in protection for the flash drive, but it is there and part of my loweing my rating from 5 stars to three stars. I would suggest looking for a flash drive that covers the entire metal part when retracted, rather than going with these. It bothers me to say that, but they are just not what they formerly were, and I would have returned them except for the fact that I desperately needed one of them when they were delivered, so I had to use it which meant keeping them all. I wouldn't recommend these if you're looking for a flash drive that can be protected when retracted. Aside from that, if it's not going to be anywhere that it could pick up dust or debris, or be knocked into by other flash drives, these would be okay..

These are slightly different from the previous Verbatim flash drives I've ordered, which had a raised button that you'd slide to move the metal head out of the plastic housing to insert it into the USB port. With this design, the underside of the plastic housing is molded with a ridge so that you slide the housing itself to move the metal head out of the housing. I found the previous design, many of which I've ordered, very easy to use. This newer design I find extremely difficult to use. Of three flash drives in the package, which was itself a bear to open, I have managed to open one of the three drives, using a rubber eraser to push the plastic ridge forward. The other two resist my efforts. Not every change is a change for the better.

Update, 12-19-2016 I know now that these are the worst USB thumb drives I have ever bought.

I have revised my review and reduced it by a star. After benchmarking these drives, the slowness is not just because they are USB 2.0 they are terribly slow even for a USB 2.0 drive. These 16gb drives are a stinker, avoid

There are 16gb thumb drives and there are those that read 16 but cannot be packed tight. We have a corporate image, it is a few hundred megs short of 16gb. I was unable to place that image on any of these. I know it fits because I have several 16gb drives that take the image just fine.

I also won't make the mistake of buying USB 2.0 again Way slow... The slowness was not part of the review and did not affect the stars

Not everyone is good about returning them, and I really didn't want another one of my high-capacity USB 3.0 drives going missing because someone couldn't be bothered to receive a file by e-mail. These are big enough that I can put almost a full semester's worth of reading, research, and papers on one, but if I lost it I wouldn't be crying (unless my online backup failed). So far all three are still working fine.

I bought these because they were cheap and colorful (harder to lose). They have a couple of weaknesses. First, they are a little slow; even copying really small files is slow enough that you can watch the progress bar advance. Normally small files should transfer faster than one can blink. Second, the sleeve slides over the USB tip to 'protect it', but it doesn't protect it from anything, since the end of the connector is still exposed to pocket lint etc... Also, when you slide it into the USB port, you're also pushing it closed. Sometimes I have to awkwardly hold it open while inserting it. A small thing, but other USB drives don't have these problems.
