Really good flash drive. I bought two of these (64GB) when they were $28 each. The mechanism is kind of spring-loaded which makes it feel nice to open. Also very fun to play with. I did get upwards of 245MB/s in real-world experiences with transferring files such as movies. Fits in a PS4 USB port (important to me). It's about 70mm in length, 20mm wide, and 10mm tall. There is a good spot on the back to label them if you wish to do so (does not smear). Comes with a free 1-year license to RescuePRO Deluxe. Personally, I didn't really enjoy using the software and there are better freeware options available. Very easy and large hole for putting on a key-ring or lanyard. After just a month of consistent use, there are scrapes on the USB plug's metal part but that's to be expected with constant use; especially if you play with it and constantly open and close it. However, it's only an aesthetics thing.

I attached a picture of mine on top of piano keys to give some people and idea of how big it actually is and to also sort of show from another perspective what the thing looks like.

BENCHMARK:
I did a benchmark when I first got the flash drive, then another benchmark about two weeks later when it was about 16GB full. Tried the front I/O ports as well as the rear ports on my motherboard. I also tested the second flash drive that has yet to be really used. They were all essentially identical within margin of error.

The SanDisk Extreme 64GB is a solid drive overall, just be mindful of what you want to use it for and what you expect for performance.

For large, sequential transfers, Sandisk's performance estimates are almost exactly on the mark. CrystalDiskMark measures the sequential transfer rate at 250MB/sec read and 180MB/sec write, which is fast enough that you'll just about need a solid state drive of some kind in order to feed it data as fast as it can write it out. If you just want to dump a bunch of files and go in the minimum amount of time necessary, then this is the perfect drive.

However random read/write performance is not nearly as strong. Even 512K random writes are down to 53MB/sec, and 4K random reads and writes drop to 10MB/sec. Though this will beat most hard drives and a number of other USB flash drives, for anyone expecting to treat this as a regular SSD in USB form factor, random performance is but a fraction of the performance of a modern SSD. Writes in particular are an order of magnitude lower than modern SSDs, so as a portable SSD running an OS (e.g. Windows-To-Go) it's not going to deliver that same fast random performance.

Under the hood this drive is based on SanDisk's older U100 SSD controller, which explains the results above. U100 is known for its strong sequential performance but weak random performance, exactly the same as this flash drive. This coupled with the limited amount of NAND and lack of write caching (since it needs to be removable) leads to the overall limited random performance. Also of note, this drive presents itself as a SATA-over-USB drive under Windows rather than a pure USB drive, which means it can be SMART monitored and TRIM is supported.

Finally, for what it is worth my 64GB drive identifies itself as a removable drive rather than a fixed drive as some other reviews have noted. It's not clear whether SanDisk has made a production change or this is somehow an older drive, but it does mean the specific drive I received is fully bootable.

Overall this is an excellent drive for storing or copying files at high speeds, which is exactly what I needed it for. Just don't expect SSD-like random read/write performance from the drive; for that there are better (albeit more expensive) options.

While I originally got this for storage and 'sneaker net' use, I had always intended to install a macOS on it for troubleshooting and maintenance.

The Good: a fair amount of storage and quite fast. I don't use benchmarks and rely on 'seat of the pants' real world performance. All I can say is it's 3.0 performance is notable. Large video files stream effortlessly. Write speeds are fast enough for me.

The Bad: it's not bootable. It's got PC security files that can't be erased or deleted on the macOS, as far as I can tell. I've reformatted and re-partitioned the drive and it still has 16 folders and 116MB of something that won't go away. I don't know how much any of that is overhead.

But the bottom line is it's NOT bootable and I don't understand why SanDisk would make it so. Conspiracy theory time? I've used other 3.0 drives as boot drives for trouble shooting and they've worked exceedingly well, especially when compared to 2.0 speeds.

So if you want to boot a Mac (and maybe a PC?) from a USB thumb drive— look elsewhere. While the read times are fast, I'd have passed if I'd know it would never work as a troubleshooting/maintenance tool.

Overall I definitely recommend
Overall I definitely am buying this again so I can have several USB OS's

PROs:
- Independent tests show this drive crushes the competition in small files read write. I didn't do those tests myself, but I believe it the way it ran the OS's Ive tried.
- I've tried several Linux-based OS's and Windows 7 on my MBA and it works great.
- Using it on a MacBook Air it works as expected.
- Sandisk reliability and durability. Ive had great success with them in the past.

CONs:
- Kind of long

--- Interesting Facts: Neither Pro or Con ---
- Obviously not as fast as the MBA SSD, but fast enough to be able to use it.

So I give this Thumb Drive a CARL JR FIVE STAR rating. If this review helped give me a like, if it didn’t tell me in the comments why!

This is my second SanDisk Extreme flash drive. I buy them because I like them. They are SUPER fast. To compare it to a different flash drive, I will tell you a quick story. I am a teacher and want to backup my files every day. Apparently, there are software programs that are "smart" (Microsoft briefcase maybe?) that know which files you edit in a day and just update those. However, I didn't know of any at the time and proceeded to work off the computer hard drive during the day, then I would fully transfer my files (about 6 gb) to a different flash drive and then once it was transferred, I would go home, knowing my files were in two places, in case the computer crashed or was stolen, or vice versa with the flash drive. However, the other flash drive I was using took about 50 minutes to transfer all my files. It was brutal. I bought this flash drive after some online research and it could finish the 6 gb transfer in roughly one and a half mins. Incredible. I would highly recommend this flash drive to anyway. It isn't a super flush one either, which I look at as a positive, because I'm less likely to forget it in a public computer.

The main reason for this purchase was to make a recovery disk for Windows 10. Yes there are other ways to do so but using a USB flash drive is by far the easiest method. Simply plug the drive into any available USB 2 or USB 3 port, wait for Windows to recognize it and use the Windows 10 supplied backup program. It takes a few minutes for the download to the drive but will save so much time and aggravation if your system crashes for any reason. You could use a smaller drive but for a few dollars more it's better to be on the safe side. If you're confused on how to make a recovery drive there are excellent demos on YouTube. It was a simple procedure which I hope I never have to use,but in a safe place in my desk drawer is the system saver just in case.

This review was made after paying full Amazon retail and no financial considerations received.

Summary: apparently does not work with the popular FL1100 (EX) USB 3.0 chipset in Windows 10.

I will start with the Cons first, since the drive essentially does not work for me.
Cons:
The drive appears to be incompatible with widely used Fresco Logic FL1100 chipset. I'm using a popular Inatek 7port USB 3.0 interface card (MFN: KTU3FR-5O2I). Three ports on the card are connected directly to the FL1100 chipset. The flash drive id not recognized by the OS (Win 10) if plugged into these ports, causing the "USB device has malfunctioned" error. This particular Inatek interface card also has 4 out of 7 ports connected via an internal USB 3.0 hub. Surprisingly, the flash drive works well when plugged into those ports (see below).

Pros:
When the drive does work, it works as advertised. As I said above, when connected via a USB hub to FL1100 USB controller the drive does work. Sequential transfer rates are really nice (over 220MB/s read, about 200MB/s write).

Overall, since a lot of computers (Some Mac Pros for example) use FL1100 chipset I am worried about the drive's compatibility and therefore I am planning to return it.
